Location
About 20 kilometers north of Alicante is the town of Jijona (Xixona in Valencian). This town of about 8,000 inhabitants is not very well known among tourists who go to the Costa Blanca, but it is indeed a special place in Spain. Jijona is the place where the Spanish delicacy turrón comes from.
Jijona is also a charming old town from the 12th century. Originally, the Arab castle was the center of the place. The coast could be monitored from this castle and the city could be protected. In addition to Arabic, other cultures can also be seen in Jijona. You can walk around the narrow, medieval streets and take in a beautiful part of Spain. You will then pass the Franciscus Convent with the Baroque church. What is special about this orange-colored convent is that it is the only one in the province with an adjacent chapel. Construction of the convent started in 1595 and everything was finished in the 18th century. The neoclassical chapel was built in the mid-18th century.
Turrón is a delicacy that is comparable to nougat, although it can sometimes be a lot harder than the nougat we know in the Netherlands. It is made from sugar, honey, almonds and egg. Spaniards love it and especially around the holidays in December, the shops are full of turrón. Jijona is known in Spain as the city of the turrón. Sweets were already made here in the Middle Ages and in the 20th century it was the most important trade in the place. A visit to Jijona is not complete without tasting turrón de Jijona! You can buy it in the center of the town, but you can also visit the museum of the turrón.
.On the hill next to Jijona you will find the ruins of the old castle of the place. The castle was built at the end of the 12th century under the leadership of the Berber Muslim dynasty of the Almohads. When the Christians reclaimed the region in the 13th century, the walls surrounding the castle were made even higher for defense purposes. Jijona was at that time an important border area between the kingdom of Aragon and the kingdom of Castile. Later the importance of the castle decreased and no more renovations were made to the castle. Today only ruins remain. You can walk around here and view the remains and above all enjoy the beautiful view of the region and the sea. The castle ruins are accessible daily and entrance is free.
For lovers of mountains, walking or cycling, a trip to the Carrasqueta mountain range is recommended. This mountain range is located between the towns of Jijona, Alcoy and Ibi. The highest peak (the Cima Carrasqueta) is about 1204 meters above sea level. For example, you can go on hikes here or simply take the car up the mountain to enjoy the view. You can go to Jijona’s tourist information for more information about walking routes, etc.
This restaurant is located, as the name suggests, behind the famous Turrón museum. It is a typical Spanish restaurant with a traditional decor and Mediterranean cuisine. The menu includes classic dishes such as paella, but also tapas snacks. During the week you can also choose a three-course menu for lunch, which costs only €9.00!
